Give a Developer Access with Extra Control Panel Users
Create extra users in the web hosting control panel so a developer or colleague gets their own login, limited to the sections and domains they need.
Don't share your own login when a developer, designer, or colleague needs to work on your site. Create a user for them in the web hosting control panel instead. Each user has their own email and password, and you choose what they can see and change. When the work is done, deactivate or delete them; your password never changes hands.
The main login of the hosting account (the master user) always keeps full access. You can only delete users marked Secondary.
Add a user
- Open the hosting control panel from the client area.
- In the side menu, open Administration → User Accounts.
- Click + (add user).
- Fill in the form:
| Field | What to enter |
|---|---|
| Nickname | A name you'll recognize, for example Ana – web developer. |
| The person's email. It's their login and can't belong to another panel user. | |
| Password / Confirm Password | A strong password (see password requirements), or use the generate button. |
| Requires Password Change | Check it so they pick their own password at first login. |
| Language | The panel language for that user. |
| User Permissions | Check only the sections they need. check all gives full access. |
| Locked Domains | Optional. Limit the user to some domains in the account, as a comma-separated list. |
| SSH Enabled | Leave it off. SSH shell access isn't available on shared hosting. For SSH, see our VPS plans. |
- Click Save, and send the person the panel address and their email. Send the password by a separate channel.
Which permissions to give
- A web developer: file manager, FTP, databases, and the domains they work on. Usually not email.
- Someone who manages mailboxes: email only.
- Full access: only for people you'd trust with your own password. They can delete sites, mailboxes, and backups.
Ask each user to turn on two-factor authentication for their login.
If they only need to upload files, an FTP account limited to one folder may be enough.
Edit, deactivate, or delete a user
- Open Administration → User Accounts.
- To change permissions or the password, click the pencil next to the user, edit, and Save.
- To pause access, select the user, choose Deactivate from With Selected, and confirm. Activate turns them back on.
- To remove the user, click the trash can next to them and confirm.
Remove access as soon as a project ends or someone leaves your team.
Client area access is separate
Panel users can't see invoices, services, or tickets in the client area. Billing and support stay with the account owner.
