VPS: Technical and Billing FAQ
Data location, resources, network, backups, SLA, operating systems, payments and cancellation for CR Servers VPS plans.
Answers to the most common questions before ordering a VPS. Current plans and prices are on Virtual Private Servers.
Data location and privacy
Where does my VPS run?
On our equipment in San José, Costa Rica, inside the country's primary telecom carrier facility. If you need it for compliance (for example Costa Rica's Law 8968), we can state this in writing.
Where are backups and snapshots stored?
On our infrastructure in San José. They are not replicated to another country.
Do you sign a confidentiality or data processing agreement?
Yes, on request. Our staff do not access your VPS disk unless you ask us to.
Are you Tier III certified?
We don't claim an Uptime Institute Tier III certification. The facility has redundant power, diesel generators, precision cooling and 24/7 physical security.
Server resources
Are vCPUs dedicated or shared?
Shared, but we don't overcommit: today the total vCPUs assigned on each physical server is below its available cores. VPS use the "host" CPU type, which exposes the full processor instruction set.
What storage do you use? Is there an IOPS limit?
SSD on distributed network storage (Ceph). Every block is written to three independent servers over 10 Gb fiber, so if a disk fails your data is still live on the other two. We don't set per-VPS IOPS limits.
Is RAM guaranteed?
Yes. We don't dynamically shrink the memory assigned to your VPS.
What virtualization do you use? Can I change plans?
KVM. You can move to a larger plan without reinstalling and keep your IP; our team handles the migration with minimal downtime. Today upgrades are done by changing plans. If you only need more disk, open a ticket and we'll review it.
Network and email
Do you block any ports?
No. Inbound ports (such as 80 and 443) and outbound ports (including 25 and 587) are open. The operating system firewall is under your control.
Is there a transfer cap?
No. Each VPS has a 150 Mbps port with unmetered transfer: no monthly cap and no overage charges.
Can I set reverse DNS (PTR)?
Yes, for IPv4 and IPv6. Request it by ticket with the IP and the hostname you want.
Is IPv6 included?
Yes. We provide a free IPv6 /80 block; request it by ticket.
Is DDoS protection included?
Yes. During a large attack we may temporarily null-route the affected IP to protect the network and other customers.
Backups and recovery
Are snapshots or backups available?
We can set up automatic snapshots for you, and you can also take your own snapshots whenever you need them.
What happens if the physical server fails?
Your VPS automatically restarts on a healthy node, with recovery in under two minutes and no manual intervention.
Availability and support
What SLA do you offer?
99.9% uptime. If we miss it, we credit the downtime pro rata.
Do you announce maintenance?
Yes, by email and in the client area, 7 days in advance. See maintenance notices.
What support is included?
VPS plans are unmanaged: the operating system and applications are your responsibility. For network or infrastructure outages we have on-call staff 24/7. During business hours (Monday to Friday, 8:00 to 18:00 Costa Rica time) we answer tickets the same business day. See how support works.
Is there an emergency console?
Yes. The noVNC web console lets you in even if SSH or a firewall rule locks you out.
Operating system and access
Which operating systems are available?
Among others, Ubuntu 26.04, 24.04 and 22.04, Debian 13 and 12, Rocky Linux, AlmaLinux, Fedora and openSUSE. Images are clean; they only include qemu-guest-agent, the standard virtualization agent.
Can I reinstall the OS myself?
Yes, from the client area.
If I use an SSH key, is root key-only?
Yes. If you add your public key when ordering, root logs in with the key only from the start. More in SSH access to your VPS.
Payments, contract and cancellation
How can I pay?
By credit or debit card, PayPal, SINPE, Bitcoin/Lightning or SWIFT transfer. See pay online.
Do I save by paying in advance?
Yes: save 20% on annual billing, 10% on semi-annual and 5% on quarterly. Prices exclude Costa Rica VAT (13%), which applies where required.
Is there a setup fee or minimum term?
No setup fee and no minimum term. You can cancel from the client area; the current period is not partially refunded.
Do you issue electronic invoices?
Yes, Costa Rica electronic invoices (factura electrónica). To invoice a company or institution, choose the "Organization" account type when you sign up and enter its legal name and tax ID (cédula jurídica).
Does the price stay the same at renewal?
The price may change at renewal. If it does, we give at least 30 days' notice.
What happens to my data if I cancel?
It remains only in our backups for the normal retention period, then it is deleted.
Acceptable use
Can I load test my own VPS?
Yes. Let us know first by ticket, with the date and time, so it isn't mistaken for an attack.
