Costa Rica Domain Registration: .cr Costs, NIC Process & Hosting

A .cr domain signals local presence and trust for Costa Rican customers. Registration is handled by NIC Costa Rica through dominios.cr — you remain the legal owner (titular). CR Servers does not sell .cr registration; we help with hosting, nameservers, email, and support after you register.
International domains (.com, .net, and similar) can still be registered or transferred through CR Servers domains in our client cart.
Two paths — do not mix them up
| TLD family | Where you register | CR Servers role |
|---|---|---|
.cr, .co.cr, .ac.cr, .ed.cr, .or.cr |
dominios.cr (NIC) | Hosting, DNS, nameservers, support |
.com, .net, .org, and other gTLDs |
CR Servers domains → HostBill cart | Registrar + hosting in one flow |
How much does a .cr domain cost?
NIC publishes registry fees on dominios.cr/faqs (excluding IVA, which is added at checkout):
| Extension | Typical 1-year fee (registry) | Notes |
|---|---|---|
.cr |
About $70 USD | Regular commercial .cr |
.co.cr |
About $25 USD | Common for businesses |
.ac.cr, .ed.cr, .or.cr, etc. |
About $25 USD | Extra documentation required |
.go.cr |
$0 | Government only |
Personal .cr domains and premium short names have separate NIC price tables — see dominios.cr before you budget.
Renewals are also paid to NIC through dominios.cr, not on CR Servers invoices.
Who can register?
Per NIC policy:
.crand.co.cr— available to individuals and companies, including registrants without physical presence in Costa Rica (foreign ID / extranjero path on dominios.cr).- Sector TLDs (
.ac.cr,.ed.cr,.fi.cr,.go.cr,.or.cr,.sa.cr) — generally require presence or documentation for that sector (school, NGO, government, etc.).
Titular identification (regular .cr / .co.cr)
Have one of these ready for the titular (owner) record:
- Costa Rican cédula (physical or jurídica)
- DIMEX or NITE
- Foreign ID where NIC allows extranjero registration
You will also enter administrative, technical, and billing contacts — each needs a working email.
Register at dominios.cr — step by step
-
Create a NIC account at dominios.cr with an email you can verify.
-
Search for your name and add an available domain to the cart.
-
Complete titular data — your name or company as legal owner, not CR Servers as titular.
-
Add nameservers — NIC requires at least two before the domain becomes active. If you plan to use CR Servers shared hosting or email, enter:
ns1.crservers.netns2.crservers.netns3.crservers.net
You can add or change these later under Panel de control → Servidores DNS on dominios.cr. A/CNAME/MX records are then managed with your hosting provider (CR Servers for shared hosting).
-
Pay NIC at checkout (card, SINPE, transfer, or PayPal per NIC — IVA shown on the invoice).
-
Order hosting from CR Servers if you still need a website or mailboxes — web hosting or VPS.
From our site, search a .cr name on Domains and we route you to dominios.cr with the same guidance.
Why choose a .cr domain?
- Local trust — familiar ccTLD for Costa Rican audiences
- Brand protection — secure your name in the national registry
- Local SEO context — useful signal alongside quality content and hosting in Costa Rica
- Clear ownership — you hold the titular record at NIC
Pair your domain with hosting in Costa Rica
After NIC registration, point the domain to CR Servers (nameservers above or A/CNAME if you keep DNS at NIC).
We provide:
- Linux shared hosting with InterWorx/SiteWorx from $5.99/mo
- Business email on your domain
- Infrastructure in leased rack space at Costa Rica's primary telecom carrier facility — operated by our team, not a generic offshore builder
- Bilingual support from San José
- Local billing (factura electrónica) and payment options including SINPE; Bitcoin/Lightning on eligible plans

Practical tips
- Register as titular yourself — CR Servers support can help with DNS, not replace your NIC account ownership.
- Set two or more nameservers early; NIC keeps the domain inactive until DNS exists.
- Keep renewal reminders in dominios.cr — late renewals add NIC penalty fees.
- For
.com/ international names, use CR Servers domains instead of dominios.cr.
